In our last session we completed the Introduction to the Quran Part 5 by explaining Quran and Science.
Today, 12-August-2026 corresponding to 29-Safar-1448 Hijri, we will talk about the Last Part of the Introduction to the Quran, Part 6 – Day to Day Issues and the Quran.
Part 6 – Day to Day Issues and the Quran
We have divided this topic into 5 main sections;
1. Summary of the Quran
We have named this section, Summary of the Quran, because there is no summary of the Quran. The Quran itself is a summary, what are you going to summarize? And we see on the internet that there are many summaries of different Surahs given. The Holy Quran needs to be expanded, only.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) informs us in, Surah al-Furqaan Verse 30 that:
وَقَالَ الرَّسُولُ يَا رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوْمِي اتَّخَذُوا هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنَ مَهْجُورًا
And Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) says, “O my Fosterer! my people have certainly taken this Quran as a forsaken thing.”[1] They have permanently left the Quran.
We only knew that Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was going to make Shifa’at, he was going to intercede on our behalf on the day of resurrection, but according to this ayah of the Holy Quran, it seems that Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is going to complain about this ummah to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). We have gathered some points which might save us from this complaint of ar-Rasool (صلى الله عليه وسلم):
- In the Indian subcontinent, we have left the Quran and started giving importance to other books other than the Quran. There are books called Panj Surah, which have morning and evening azkaar and around 5 Surahs, which are regularly recited, such as, Surah al-Fatiha, Tabarak, Waqiya, ar-Rahman and Yaa Seen.
- There are different types of these books, depending on what the publisher preferred, one or more Surahs in these could be different.
- If we read these books morning and evening, then where is the time to read the Quran from cover to cover, as we are daily focusing on 4-5 surahs.
- The reason for mentioning this is due to the fact that these types of books are a kind of a summary of the Quran, if you can’t read the entire Quran, just read these five surahs they are sufficient for you. This way we are only focused on getting hasanaat and not focusing on the purpose of the revelation of the Quran, which is to understand and act upon its verses.
- When the five surahs were not enough, they started adding more surahs to these books, making the total quantity of the surahs reach 16.
- The books that we have invented instead of the Quran, contain certain surahs of the Quran, but their sequence is as per the wish of the publisher, and is not the sequence of Surahs as per the Quran. So, imagine the harm we are doing, the sequence which Allah gave for the Surahs in the Quran, I am using my mind to change the sequence given by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). Isn’t this an injustice towards the Quran.
- Whatever virtues of the Surahs that have been mentioned in Ahadith, those virtues are fine, we accept them, for example:
- Surah al-Fatiha has shifa in it,[2] it is the preface to the Quran, it is the source or the substance of the Quran, Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) called it Ummul Quran, whose verses are oft-repeated.[3]
- It is the most superior Surah.[4]
- There is no Surah like al-Fatiha in any of the divinely revealed books, neither in the Torah nor in the Bible nor in the Quran itself.[5]
- Regarding Surah al-Baqarah and Surah aal-Imran, Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, recite them, for on the day of resurrection they will come as two clouds or two shades, or two flocks of birds in ranks, pleading for those who recite them. Recite Sūrah al-Baqarah, for to take recourse to it is a blessing and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the magicians cannot confront it.[6]
- Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, Do not turn your households into graveyards. Indeed, the devils flee from a household that has Sūrah al-Baqarah recited in it.[7]
- There is a verse in Surah al-Baqarah, which is the greatest ayah in the Quran.[8]
- Which ayah is it?
- Ayat al-Kursi
- And, Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, Whoever recites Āyatul Kursī at the end of (or after) each farz salah, nothing prevents him from entering paradise except death.[9]
- Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) Whoever reads the last two verses from Sūrah al-Baqarah at night, they will be sufficient for him.[10]
- These two verses were given to Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) when he visited Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) in Meraj.[11]
- And he (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, Certainly, Allah wrote in a book two thousand years before He created teh heavens and the earth, and He sent down two Ayat from it to end Surah al-Baqarah with. If they are recited for three nights in a home, no Shaitan shall come near it.[12]
- Ali (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) said, I did not think that any reasonable person could sleep without reciting the last verses of Sūrah al-Baqarah, and they are indeed treasures from beneath the Throne, the Arsh of Allah.[13]
- One day Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) stood in Qiyamul Layl and started to cry, until his cheeks became wet, and (ummul momineen Aisha (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُا) said) he cried after that until his beard was wet, and (she said) he continued crying until the tears started to fall to the ground. At that moment, Bilāl (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) came to Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) to announce the Fajr prayer and he saw him crying. He said, “O Messenger of Allah, why are you crying? Indeed, Allah has forgiven your previous and future sins.” Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) replied, “Shall I not be a grateful servant? A verse has been revealed to me on this night, woe to the one who reads it and does not reflect upon it. He then read:[14]
- In the creation of the skies (heavenly bodies) and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day, certainly there are signs for men of understanding,[15]
- This ayah is in Surah aal-Imran.
- Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) glorified Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) when Surah al-An’am was revealed, and said, ‘So many Angels accompanied its revelation that the horizon was covered with them.[16]
- Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) did not sleep until he recited Surah az-Zumar and al-Isra.[17]
- People complain about sleeplessness, insomnia, etc. try this formula of the Sunnah. One of my friends suffering from insomnia says that he only reads the first few verses of the Surah and then he is gone, i.e. falls asleep.
- Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, whoever memorizes the first ten verses of Surah al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal.[18]
- In another hadith in Sunan ad-Darimi, Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, Those of you who live up to this time should recite over him the opening verses of Sūrah al-Kahf, for they are your protection from his trial.[19]
- Whoever reads Sūrah al-Kahf on the day of Jumu’ah, a light will shine for him between the two Fridays.[20]
- …Whoever recites the last ten verses of Surah al-Kahf and then encounters ad-Dajjal will not be harmed (by him).[21]
- Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) would recite in the fajr prayer in the morning of Jumuah, Surah as-Sajdah in the first Rakah and Surah al-Insan in the second rakah.[22]
- Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) would not sleep until he had recited Surah as-Sajdah and Surah al-Mulk.[23]
- If Surah Yaa Seen is recited before a dying person, he finds relief.[24]
- It is reported in the book, Special Virtues of the Qur’an’s Chapters and Verses that when Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) came out of his house, in the night when he left Makkah and made his hijrah, Abu Jahl and his companions had surrounded Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم)’s house, he took a handful of dirt from the ground and started pouring on top of their heads, while reciting Surah Yaa Seen. Allah veiled their sight and they were unable to see him.[25]
- It is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari that Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was reciting Surah al-Fath on the Day of the conquest of Makkah.[26]
- Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, he loved Surah al-Fath,[27] but regarding reciting it everyday, there are no authentic ahadith on it.[28]
- Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) recited Surah Qaaf and Surah Qamar in the Eid Prayers.[29] He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to recite Surah Qaaf in the Fajr prayer frequently,[30] and during Jumuah Khutbah.[31]
- In Silsilah al-Ahadith as-Saheeha, Sheikh al-Albani reports a hadith, where Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, Surah al-Mulk prevents the punishment of the grave.[32]
- In Sahih al-Jami, Tabarani and others, it is reported that Surah al-Mulk argues on behalf of its companion until it enters him into paradise.[33]
- Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) recited in the first rakah of Witr, Surah al-A’la, in the second rakah, Surah al-Kafiroon, and in the third rakah, Surah al-Ikhlas.[34]
- Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to recite Surah al-A’la and Surah al-Ghashiyah during the Friday prayers.[35] and sometimes in Eid prayers.[36]
- Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to pray 2 rakah while sitting after witr prayer, in which he would recite Surah al-Zilzal and Surah al-Kafiroon.[37]
- Is Surah al-Zilzal equivalent to one-fourth of the Quran?
- Hadith scholars say that the narrations regarding this have some weakness in them, although they are strengthened by joining all the mursal ahadith together with individual weaknesses. Ibn Khuzaymah graded one hadith from Anas ibn Malik (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) as Sahih and at-Tirmidhi graded one narration as Hasan.
- So, the short answer is Yes, it is equal to one fourth of the Quran.
- When two companions met with each other, they would not separate from each other until they recited Surah al-Asr and then they would give salam and leave.[38]
- In one hadith it is reported that Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) told a sahabi to recite Surah al-Kafiroon before sleeping, as it is a declaration of freedom from Shirk.[39]
- Regarding Surah al-Ikhlas, Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, it is equal to one-third of the Quran.[40]
- He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said to his Companions, “Is anyone of you incapable of reciting one-third of the Qur’an in one night?” They considered it burdensome and said: “O Messenger of Allah, which of us can afford to do that?” He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, “Surat Al-Ikhlas [Say: He is Allah (the) One] is equivalent to one-third of the Qur’an.”[41]
- A man said: “O Messenger of Allah! (صلى الله عليه وسلم) I love Surat-Al-Ikhlas” He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, “Your love for it will admit you to Jannah.”[42]
- Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to recite Surah al-Ikhlas in the second rakah of the sunnah prayers before fajr, and in the last rakah of the witr prayer.[43]
- It is proven from Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) to recite al-Muawwazaat, meaning the last three surahs of the Quran, al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas after every prayer.[44]
- Whenever Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after reciting Surahs al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas, and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face and front of his body. He used to do that three times.[45]
- And in the morning and evening azkar, ar-Rasool (صلى الله عليه وسلم), recited these three surahs three times and said, it will suffice you in all respects.[46]
- There are other Surahs about which some virtues are mentioned but those narrations are too weak.
- If we consider all of the above benefits, which are mentioned in the authentic ahadith of Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) still it does not mean that we will publish each Surah or some collection of Surahs as a book. If we do this then we have the risk of becoming part of the complaint of Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) on the day of resurrection.
- Nowadays we see on many websites, some Muslims are publishing articles and circulating on Whatsapp,
- 9 Lessons from Surah Hujurat,[47]
- 5 Lessons from Surah Yusuf,[48]
- 4 Lessons from Surah Kahf,[49]
- This also we cannot do and it is because, Quran itself is a Summary:
- The first proof of what I am saying is the fact that – the Arabic of the Quran or the words used in its ayaat are very concise, and we cannot express the ayaat in less words than what the Quran has used, and I will give some examples:
- In Surah al-Muddathir, Allah Ta’ala says:
- The first proof of what I am saying is the fact that – the Arabic of the Quran or the words used in its ayaat are very concise, and we cannot express the ayaat in less words than what the Quran has used, and I will give some examples:
(عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ)
- Over it are nineteen.[50]
- If you read the verses above and below this verse, we come to know that this statement refers to 19 angels being appointed over hell as protectors.
- How many words did the Quran use to express this?
- Three
- The translation uses?,…, Four words, and if we have to say it in a way people understand, more words are required.
- No other language can express in less words than what the Quran uses, its a challenge, you cannot do it.
- Another example is the description of a fetus inside the womb of the mother, every few days the shape of the fetus changes and the Quran describes these in Surah al-Hajj.
- For each stage, Quran uses X number of words to describe the stage,
- Can you guess how many words the Quran uses for describing the entire stage? One word.
- Nutfa – Sperm, which then combines with the egg in the mother’s womb and sticks to the wall of the uterus.
- This stage is called Alaqa – this word describes the entire process of this stage, Alaqa creates Talloq, connectivity with the womb to get nutrients, and it is Muallaq, hanging from the roof or wall of the uterus, just one word.
- Then comes Mudhgha – again it defines the entire stage of Human development, and I can go on…
- I challenge anyone to describe in words less than the Quran, and what can be less than a word, you cannot do it.
- I hope you got the point, the summary we are claiming to make, is not the summary of the Quran, you are skipping ayaat.
- The second proof is that – if there was a Summary of the Quran, Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) would have told us, and we would have found it in ahadith collections.
- Every Ayah of the Quran is binding on us, we cannot leave ayaat based on our thinking that some are important and some are non-important ayaat, what are we trying to do?
- Tafseer of the Quran and its Rules
The Quran needs to be expanded, it needs to be explained, which we call Tafseer. There are rules of Tafseer, or Usool at-Tafseer. Dr. Bilal Philips is a scholar and whose Usool at-Tafseer provides the following rules for Tafseer, as follows:
- The Holy Quran explains itself, meaning that some verses explain other verses, so the first usool is to explain the Quran with itself,
- Ahadith an-Nabi (صلى الله عليه وسلم) explain some verses, or they give context or background of how, or when a certain verse was revealed, so the second usool is to use Ahadith to explain the Quran,
- Third rule of Tafseer or third usool is to use the athar of the companions of ar-Rasool (صلى الله عليه وسلم), which are the opinion of the Sahaba (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُمْ) they would use their own reasoning based on their knowledge of the contexts of the verses and the intricacies of the Arabic language in which the Qur’an was revealed.
- The fourth usool came to be due to the deterioration of the currently used Arabic language, and it is Tafseer of the Quran by Arabic Language, with the passage of time, words took on new meanings and old meanings became lost, foreign words entered into the language, and vast sections of vocabulary fell into disuse.[51]
- This natural process necessitated the explanation of some of the Qur’anic words according to their literal and grammatical meanings.
- This is also the biggest challenge faced by Arab youth today, they think they understand the Quran, but they get stuck because of the words and the vocabulary of the Quran.
- The solution to this is very easy, read the Quran, the things you do not understand, ask.
- Then the Seerat ar-Rasool (صلى الله عليه وسلم) plays an important role in the explanation or understanding of the Quran, the more we understand the Quran, the better we can understand the Seerah, and vice versa,
- And in this day and age, we have to explain the Quran using current knowledge, and modern science, Scientific explanations are required to explain certain verses.
- All of this we have to do to make sure we learn how to implement the Quran in our lives.
3. Reading Quran without understanding it
There are a group of people who are simply reading the Quran without understanding it, they do it regularly, everyday. Their goal is to get the reward of reading the Quran.
- However, the purpose of the revelation of the Quran, is to receive the guidance it contains, as mentioned in Surah al-Baqarah verse 185. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) has told us, Quran was revealed for the guidance of Human Beings, not just Muslims, (Hudal li-Nas) but for the entire Humanity, for all Human Beings.[52]
- In a hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari, Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: There will appear some people among you whose prayer will make you look down upon yours, and
- Whose fasting will make you look down upon yours,
- But they will recite the Qur’an which will not exceed their throats (they will not act on it) and
- They will go out of Islam as an arrow goes out through the game whereupon the archer would examine the arrowhead but see nothing, and
- Look at the unfeathered arrow but see nothing, and
- Look at the arrow feathers but see nothing, and finally he suspects to find something in the lower part of the arrow.[53]
- The Quran recitation of Sahaba (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُمْ) will look like nothing.
- Their Quran recitation according to the rules of Tajweed are perfect, but no amaal.
- So what does this mean?
- Quran was sent down so that we read it, understand it, make our judgements according to it, so that we act upon its verses.
- And these ahadith we have heard before in previous sections, Abdullah ibn Amr ibn A’as (رضي الله عنهما) narrated: Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said to me, “Recite the whole Qur’an in one month’s time.”
- I said, “But I have power (to do more than that).”
- Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, “Then finish the recitation of the Qur’an in seven days, and do not finish it in less than this period.”.[54]
- In another Hadith, also narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-A’as (رضي الله عنهما) Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, He who recites the Qur’an in less than three (days), he does not understand it.[55]
- So, what do we learn from these ahadith: the purpose of reading the Quran should be to understand it.
- The second category of people are those who, repeatedly read only one-two Surahs because they like those Surahs, Surah ar-Rahman and Surah al-Waqiyah, or they like some verses from certain Surahs and they keep reciting those only.
- You open tiktok or instagram, every qari is reciting only certain verses
- Who will read the whole Surah, and what about the whole Quran?
- We heard the benefits of certain Surahs, Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) mentioned those benefits, so on an individual level some people are listening to or reading certain Surahs only, it is their choice.
- Someone found out that Surah al-Baqarah has a lot of benefits, he wants to keep reading that Surah only, but you cannot push others to do the same because you benefitted from some part of the Quran.
- The entire Quran has healing in it, the entire Quran has guidance in it, the entire Quran has barakah in it. We have to read the entire Quran.
- Third category are those who read and understand the Quran, but they do not act upon it;
- Abdullah Ibn Umar (رضي الله عنهما) took 8 years to learn Surah al-Baqarah,[56] isn’t it strange in this day and age?
- I have seen many people, who listen to the Quran at 1.25x or 1.5x the regular speed, they think they don’t have time. I tried it once, you cannot understand what is being recited.
- So, imagine what Abdullah ibn Umar (رضي الله عنهما) was doing, whatever he reads, he would memorize it, he would understand it, reflect on it, and try to implement it and until he did not implement it or act upon it, he would not proceed to the next ayah.
- I believe this is the solution to our problems, read the Quran, understand it, reflect on it, and act upon it.
- And if we do this for one ayah, it is much better than finishing the Quran without understanding it.
- Good deeds or Hasanat will come either way,
- We have heard this hadith over and over, that on reading one letter of the Quran, we get 10 hasanat,
- There is no limit to the number of good deeds we will get.
- The main purpose is to understand the Quran and act upon it.
4. Believing in one part of the Quran and rejecting the other
- We have to act upon the entire Quran, otherwise as the Quran says in Surah al-Baqarah Verse 85 where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) says:
…أَفَتُؤْمِنُونَ بِبَعْضِ الْكِتَابِ وَتَكْفُرُونَ بِبَعْضٍ ۚ…
- …Do you then believe in one part of the book and reject the other part?…[57]
- Someone may object that this verse of Surah al-Baqarah was revealed in connection with Bani Israil, and it does not apply to Muslims.
- So, the answer to this objection is that if this verse was revealed in connection with Bani Israil, and whatever they did, why then this ayah is there in the Quran? Why are we being told about the actions of Bani Israil?
- Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) answers these questions in the same ayah, as He further states:
- …Then what is the reward of one who does like that among you, except disgrace in the life of this world? And on the day of resurrection they will be sent towards a severe punishment,…
- In fact, we have been instructed in, Surah al-Baqarah +Verse 208, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) says:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا ادْخُلُوا فِي السِّلْمِ كَافَّةً وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا خُطُوَاتِ الشَّيْطَانِ ۚ إِنَّهُ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ مُبِينٌ
- O you who believe! enter into Islam completely (with total submission) and do not follow the footsteps of the devil, he is certainly an open enemy for you.[58]
- Guidance in the form of the Quran is with us, no one can claim that he did not receive guidance, Quran is available in our houses, it is our duty to understand it, and how to act upon it is recorded in ahadith, if we do not understand some verses, ask the person who knows, there is no excuse for us not to act upon the Quran and no excuse will be accepted from us on the day of resurrection.
- Quran and ahadith are the only two sources of guidance and other than these two there is nothing else which can guide us.
- On social media we see today, people are posting emotional stories, mostly non-Muslims are doing these type of posts and since we are away from the Quran and the ahadith of ar-Rasool (صلى الله عليه وسلم), we also like such emotional stories and we forward them.
- We feel happy that we did something good. Forwarded an emotional story, there was moral in it, etc.
- These emotional stories are fictional stories there is no reality in them, we as Muslims do not need these things:
- Quran and Hadith are already telling us to be good to parents, to respect them, to love them, to take care of them,
- Quran and Hadith are already telling us to respect Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and to love him, to follow his example,
- Quran and Hadith already instructs us concerning Allah (رَبُّ الْعِزَّة).
- If we think that by circulating these false, fictional and emotional stories we are going to get hasanat, then may Allah Ta’ala save us from such thoughts.
- We don’t need these stories as we have instructions for them in Quran and Hadith.
5. Amaal and Niyyah – Contract with Allah (Between the heart of the Slave and the Master)
- This is the last section in terms of the Introduction to the Holy Quran,
- Now, after listening to these lectures, if someone starts reading the Quran, understanding it and starts doing good deeds then he has three options and it is important to correct these things before proceeding further, as the reward will be based on it.
- First is the Niyyah:
- In the first hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari, Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said
إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ
- The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions…,[59]
- So, we have to choose, what is my niyyah? If it is wrong then correct it then act upon the Quran and Hadith,
- This is because he has a contract with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى), so his contract is according to the correct intentions. This contract is not written down anywhere, but it is a matter between the qalb or heart of the slave and Allah (رَبُّ الْعِزَّة).
- The first option we have is that someone has a niyyah, that the reward of his good deeds be given to him in this world itself.
- What is the proof of all of this?
- In Surah al-Baqarah Ayah # 200, Allah Ta’ala says:
…فَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَقُولُ رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا …
- …So among human beings are those who say, “Our Fosterer! give us in this world,”…
- What will become of these people? In the same ayah Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) answers, and he says,
…وَمَا لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ مِنْ خَلَاقٍ
- and they have no portion in the hereafter.[60]
- May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) not make us among these people (aameen).
- Second option is that the person makes the niyyah, that the reward is distributed in this duniya and the hereafter;
- Again, what is the proof?
- The next ayah provides the proof, in Surah al-Baqarah verse 201 Allah Ta’ala says:
وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ يَقُولُ رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
- And of them are those who say, “Our Fosterer! give us good in this world and good in the hereafter and save us from the punishment of fire.”[61]
- So how are these people dealt with?
- The next ayah of Surah al-Baqarah provides the answer, in verse #202 Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) says,
أُولَٰئِكَ لَهُمْ نَصِيبٌ مِمَّا كَسَبُوا ۚ وَاللَّهُ سَرِيعُ الْحِسَابِ
- Those are the persons for whom there is (their) portion of what they earned, and Allah is Quick at (settling) the account.[62]
- The third option is that the person makes the niyyah, this is a difficult one, that the reward be given to him only in akhirah.
- The proof of this is again in Surah al-Baqarah ayah #207, Allah Ta’ala says:
وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَشْرِي نَفْسَهُ ابْتِغَاءَ مَرْضَاتِ اللَّهِ…
- And among human beings is he who sells himself seeking the pleasure of Allah,
وَاللَّهُ رَءُوفٌ بِالْعِبَادِ
- And Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) is full of pity for (His) servants.[63]
- In the most beautiful names and attributes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى), there is the attribute ar-Raoof.
- Who is ar-Raoof? Our Ustaz Dr. Anees writes in his book, The Attributes of Allah – Know your Creator, that ar-Raoof is the one who is full of pity for his creation, who is sympathetic, considerate, merciful, who has the desire to do good, the one who grants benefits, helps and guides to the straight path and saves the slaves from harm.[64]
- So, the people who sold themselves to Allah, how do you think Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) is going to respond? Allah Ta’ala makes their duniya bright and in the hereafter, they will have a great reward.
- Following are some proofs from ahadith?
- Now see the coordination between the Quran and Hadith.
- In a hadith in Musnad Ahmed, Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: There is no Muslim who calls upon Allah, without sin or cutting family ties, but that Allah will give him one of three answers:
- The first method is that, He will quickly fulfill his supplication, now if we compare the first option based on the niyyah, between Allah and His slave, there he gets all the reward in duniya and there is no reward in the akhirah, and here the supplication is immediately accepted.
- Second Method is that, based on the supplication Allah Ta’ala will divert evil from him in duniya, and what was the second option based on niyyah:
أُولَٰئِكَ لَهُمْ نَصِيبٌ مِمَّا كَسَبُوا
- Their reward is equivalent to the portion of what they earned, is this a coincidence? Doesn’t seem so.
- The third method is that, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) stores the supplication and will reward him in the hereafter.[65]
- So those who sold themselves to Allah, to receive His pleasure, their dua will be stored for the hereafter to rewarded in the akhirah.
- All of this is also based on what we think of Allah and what our intentions are, because Allah Ta’ala says in a Hadith Qudsi:
- “I am as My slave thinks of Me, and I am with him when He calls upon Me.”[66]

[2] Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported: We landed at a place where a woman came to us and said: A scorpion has bitten the chief of the tribe. Is there any incantator amongst you? A person amongst us stood up (and went with her). We had no idea that he had been a good incantator but he practiced incantation with the help of Sura al-Fatiha and the (the chief) was all right. They gave him a flock of sheep and served us milk. We said (to him): Are you a good incantator. Thereupon he said: I did not do it but by the help of Sura al-Fatiha. He said: Do not drive (these goats) until we go to Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and find out (whether it is permissible to accept (this reward of incantation). So we came to Allah’s Apostle (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and made a mention of that to him, whereupon he said: How did you come to know that this (Sura al-Fatiha) could be used as an incantation? So distribute them (amongst those who had been present there with him) and allocate a share of mine also.

[5] Yahya related to me from Malik from al-Ala ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Yaqub that Abu Saidؓ, the mawla of Amir ibn Kuraz told him that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, called to Ubayy ibn Kab while he was praying. When Ubayy had finished his prayer he joined the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the Messenger of Allah put his hand upon his hand, and he was intending to leave by the door of the mosque, so the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “I hope that you will not leave the mosque until you know a sura whose like Allah has not sent down in the Tawrah nor in the Injil nor in the Qur’an.” Ubayy said, “I began to slow down my pace in the hope of that. Then I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, the sura you promised me!’ He said, ‘What do you recite when you begin the prayer?’ I recited the Fatiha (Sura 1) until I came to the end of it, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘It is this sura, and it is the “seven oft-repeated” and the Great Qur’an which I was given.’ “

Recite Sūrah al-Baqarah, for to take recourse to it is a blessing and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the magicians cannot confront it.”

Regarding the word ‘sufficient’ in the hadith, Imam al-Nawawi (RA) says: It was said (by scholars) that it means it will suffice him from the night prayer, and others said it means as a protection against the devils, and yet others said it means protection against harmful animals, and it is likely encompassing of all these things (and more).”
Ibn Ḥajar states: “[It] was explicitly reported by ʿĀsim from ʿAlqamah from Ibn Masʿūd, “Whoever recites (the two verses at) the end of Sūrat al-Baqarah, it will be sufficient for him instead of standing in prayer for one night.”

(It is with reference to this that) Allah said (in the meaning of), “while the Lote Tree was overwhelmed with ˹heavenly˺ splendours” (53:16). The narrator said: (It was) gold moths. He also said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was given three things: “He was given the five daily prayers, he was given the concluding verses of Sūrah al-Baqarah (i.e., 285-286), and forgiveness of serious sins for those among his Ummah who do not associate partners with Allah.”

Those of you who live up to his time should recite over him the opening verses of Sūrah al-Kahf, for they are your protection from his trial.” We asked, “How long will he remain on the earth?” He replied, “Forty days, one like a year, one like a month, one like a week, and rest of his days like yours.” We asked, “Messenger of Allah ﷺ, will one day’s prayer suffice us in this day which will be like a year?” He replied, “No, you must make an estimate of its extent. Then Jesus son of Mary will descend at the white minaret to the east of Damascus. He will then catch him up at the gate of Ludd and kill him.”

It is reported on the authority of Abu Hurairaؓ that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: Get together. for I am going to recite one-third of the Qur’an before you. And those who could get together gathered there. Then the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) came out and recited:” Say: He, Allah, is One.” He then entered (his house). Some of us said to the others: Perhaps there has been some news from the heaven on account of which he has gone Inside (the house). The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) again came out and said: I told you that I was going to recite one-third of the Qur’in; keep in mind, this (Surah Ikhlas) is equivalent to one-third of the Qur’an.
